The Glider Pilot Network started out in March 1998 as Soaring Pages, firstly providing classified adverts for gliders, and then various other facilities including the now highly popular uk.rec.aviation.soaring. Due to the high demand and lack of reliability on the original free server that Soaring Pages was hosted on, a decision was made to move the site onto a commerical server complete with it's own domain name - gliderpilot.net, and the site became the Glider Pilot Network. In time, the Glider Pilot Network has grown in popularity and has moved from server to server to attempt to keep up with the demand, and is presently on it's own dedicated server in Docklands (for the technically minded it's a Cobalt Raq 3 running RedHat Linux), provided at a highly competitive price thanks to Ian Molesworth, who leases the server. The main aim of the Glider Pilot Network is to be an entirely non-profit site providing a useful and informative service to pilots across Europe. However, the site costs money to run and there is therefore a need for a small amount of income to be generated (apart from my wallet!). Rather than specifically charge for the use of services on the site, it seems a better idea to invite donations if the site has helped in anyway - say in the sale of a glider etc. To supplement this, there will be gliding related banner adverts on pages, which will have been payed for by the advertisers. These adverts will mainly be gliding related - and do guarantee income to run the site, so please click through and take a look once in a while!!
