Terry Stubbs Junior and Gordon Robertson made an epic 81km paramotor flight from Montrose to just north of Balmoral in September 2006. Their hour-and-a-half flight reached 6,650ft and 40mph over the ground until slowed by a headwind at Lochnagar. "Conditions were a bit strong, necessitating a reverse launch at Montrose to get off, and were rougher than a badger's arse when we landed on the Tomintoul road!" reported Terry. "As we descended below cloudbase it got rough - there's always a thermal about when you don't want it! Our groundspeed diminished to around 2mph making our descent almost vertical. Nevertheless a beautiful day and an awesome adventure - the air was beautifully smooth above cloudbase. Navigation was by GPS and map. Our plan was to fly to Tomintoul, and we would have made it if conditions hadn't changed."
